Whenever people IRL ask what I do, they usually give me a blank look when I say “email marketing.” And then when I explain what email marketing is – using laypeople-friendly examples like Old Navy or Sephora – they say something like “Ah, you’re one of those annoying spammers.” Which is technically inaccurate. Marketing emails are not spam. They might be frequent. They might be annoying. But they’re not spam. But the important thing to remember is that it doesn’t matter. Enough people think they’re spam. Point is: It’s really important to keep your readers’ reality in mind. You might be “right.” But they’re the arbiters of justice.
